When listing products in industrial directories (like Thomasnet, Alibaba, or Kompass), choosing the right resolution is a balancing act between visual clarity and page load speed. Poorly optimized images can lead to high bounce rates, while low-resolution images make your company look unprofessional.

Guidelines for Choosing Image Resolutions

1. The "Goldilocks" Resolution

For most B2B and industrial directories, your "Master Image" should be high enough to allow for zooming but light enough for global browsing.

  • Recommended Size: 1200 x 1200 pixels or 1500 x 1500 pixels.
  • Aspect Ratio: Use a 1:1 (Square) ratio. Most directories use square grids; using a square image ensures you occupy the maximum "real estate" on the screen without being cropped.

2. File Format and Compression

Industrial directories often serve users in regions with varying internet speeds.

  • WebP: Use this format if the directory supports it; it offers superior compression without quality loss.
  • JPEG: If WebP isn't allowed, use high-quality JPEGs saved at 70–80% quality. This reduces file size significantly while remaining visually sharp.
  • DPI/PPI: Set to 72 DPI. High DPI (like 300) is for print and only adds unnecessary "weight" to web files.

3. Consistency Across Listings

  • White Space: Maintain a "padding" of about 10% around your product. If the image is 1000px wide, the product should occupy the center 900px. This prevents the product from looking "cramped" in the directory's thumbnail view.
  • Color Profile: Always save images in the sRGB color space to ensure colors look consistent across different monitors and mobile devices.

4. Thumbnail vs. Detail View

Most directories automatically generate thumbnails from your upload. However, if you are asked to upload specific sizes:

  • Thumbnail: 200 x 200 pixels (Focus on the silhouette).
  • Main Listing: 600 x 600 pixels (Focus on clarity).
  • Zoom/Large View: 1200+ pixels (Focus on texture and labels).
